practical shelter innovation for disaster relief

Cold climate option

The following description is for the steel shelter kit
but the same shelter can be built from bamboo as described in the bamboo workshop report.

Here two poles have been removed from the upper frame to make a smaller survival space.

These two poles can be used to extend the central square frame and create a vent for a stove flu as indicated in the photo.

In an extreme emergency, or high risk of exposure, an open fire could be made in this corner of the shelter. The frame can easily be lifted to back into the wind to make this possible.

The main roof frame of the shelter can support a heavy layer of snow if necessary or be covered with multiple layers of any available insulating material.
