practical shelter innovation for disaster relief

Dartmoor prototype shelter trials

In August 2010 we tested the first prototype ReciproBoo shelter under storm conditions on an exposed hillside on Dartmoor UK..

This prototype was made from smaller 19mm diameter and 75cm long tubular steel sections ( compared to the 22mm x 90cm poles of the full size shelter).

The shelter performed exceptionlly well.

In high winds the shelter frame flexed as expected and the structure did not require maintenance or adjustments to the frame itself. The lightweight plastic sheeting, however, did require repeated anchoring to the ground at the height of the storm; it would have been preferable to bury the lower edges of the sheeting in the ground to prevent this. Heavier plastic sheeting would also result in less wind noise under storm conditions.
