Elevating the RSK roof

Both the steel and bamboo roof can easily be elevated to increase headroom and living space.
In these field tests on Bodmin moor the steel shelter has been lifted onto a stone wall.

The bamboo shelter can also be lifted onto a wall or bamboo posts that have been sunk into the ground.

Benefits 41

Elevating the base of the frame roof considerably increases living space.

This can be done on day one if the frame can be lifted onto a low stone wall, wooden or bamboo posts. This is particularly useful in urban disasters where use can be made of available bricks and masonry.

It is a feature of the reciprocal frame that the further the frame is elevated towards the horizontal its stability and ability to bear weight actually increases.

This is due to the "vertical locking" force exerted by gravity and is a unique feature of the reciprocal frame roof.

The base of this roof frame has been lifted onto wooden posts

This is easy to achieve. Any low wall or rigid posts can be made use of.

Benefits 48

Here the base of the shelter has been fully lifted onto 2 wooden posts.

Earth bag walls can be built to fully support the frame roof. Heavy posts that are sunk in the ground can also be used.

Unlike conventional roofs the reciprocal frame roof does not exert "spreading forces" at the points of support.

Roof repair

The steel frame can be used as a temporary repair for a damaged roof.

Ideally the frame should be fixed at a slight incline but even if it is horizontal the water drains to the sides if the tarp is kept taught.

Water build up within the central part of the frame is minimal and easily supported by the reciprocal frame
