Bamboo and steel RSK parts are interchangeable

After the recent bamboo demonstration at Coventry University it became clear that the same rope attachment procedure that we use for the bamboo shelter could also work for the steel shelter.

The steel RSK could therefore be built without the hooks for rope attachment .

This is the final step towards making the parts of the steel and bamboo interchangeable.

What does this mean?

1. Hybrid bamboo and steel shelters can be built.

This can be useful where both steel and bamboo resources are available.

2. The steel RSK can now be assembled without any special fixings.
All that is required are standard steel poles, standard tarpaulins, ropes, lashings and wire. The wire would be used to pass through the locking clip hole at the top of the support poles and around the ridge pole to support it prior to lashing together.

3. The steel RSK can be reduced from 20 to 12 tubular steel sections ( reciprocal roof frame only) in special circumstances.
This 40% saving in steel could be useful for relief teams who are able to complete the shelters with the community using salvaged bamboo, wood or branches. The roof frame would provide the overhead tarpaulin support and the salvaged poles and posts the remaining supporting framework.

Proposal to build hybrid shelters using steel and wood.

We have previously built a basic RSK using branches in UK ( see RedR hands on shelter).

We propose that a team of arborists
( for example DART ) that are highly trained in the use of chainsaws, could work with a devastated community to make maximum use of salvaged wood.

In the following examples the 4 pole reciprocal steel frame would provide the overhead support for the tarpaulin and this roof frame in turn would be supported by wooden poles.

1. Three trimmed branches could provide the most basic emergency shelter to get familes under cover on the first day after a disaster..

2. Alternatively, eight trimmed branches could provide an elevated shelter.

3. In situations where palm tress are being salvaged, use could be made of cut timber planks for ridges and whole palm stumps for the corner supports.
